As a designer on Blackthrone, DraftKings’ internal design team for game development, I was responsible for UI/UX design, with a strong focus on crafting intuitive, intricate interfaces for a wide range of popular casino games available on the DraftKings platform. Game design
I start by creating a low-fidelity flow of to help map out the mechanics and any edge cases which will later aid in conceptualizing the UX of a casino game once transitioning into Figma.
Once the the mechanics of a game are developed, I begin transferring that info into Figma and developing flows that help articulate the game process. It includes various stages such as game setup, player actions, and win/loss conditions. Arrows connect different paths to show the progression of the game, with decision points for actions like betting, secondary game modes, and receiving payouts. The flow also highlights interactions between the game interface and backend processes, visualizing how the game logic is executed. Labels, components, and icons represent key game features such as jackpots, bonus rounds, and reel outcomes.
After completing the Figma flow outlining the game’s mechanics, a low-fidelity prototype is created to visualize the gameplay experience. This prototype translates the flow into basic interactive gameplay, showcasing the core user journey from placing a bet to seeing results and receiving payouts. It focuses on simple layout, navigation, and functionality rather than final design and art elements. The prototype allows for early testing of user interactions and game logic before moving into high-fidelity design and development.
After completing and approving the prototype, final art assets and design elements were integrated to produce the finished product. This stage focused on refining the game’s visual identity — including color schemes, typography, animations, and themed graphics to create an engaging and immersive player experience.
